Stag Night in Hammerwich

The past few months have been an exciting time for residents of the village with several unexpected wildlife sightings. In July, Dorothy Nicholl of Overton Lane found a Sycamore moth caterpillar.

During August, Peter Dewhurst of Coppice Lane, reported a sighting of two juvenile Polecats, reflecting a trend over the last decade that has seen this carnivore returning to Staffordshire from Wales and expanding its territorial range.

Several days later, Helen Dewhurst reported a sighting of a mature adult male Red Deer. This latter report follows earlier sightings by other residents and suggests that Hammerwich may be becoming a regular haunt for this species. Both of these sightings have been submitted to the Staffordshire Ecological Record (SER) which can be found at www.staffs-ecology.org.uk. This resource has been set up by a consortium of environmental groups and local authorities across Staffordshire to document the county's plants and animals. The archive contains over 600,000 entries and further information is available from Craig Slawson, the Ecological Records Co-ordinator on 01889 880100 or email info@staffs-ecology.org.uk
